How did you get into boxing and how did you find yourself at 3rd Street?

β€œI have always been a combat sports fan. I pretty much watch it whenever I can. I've always wanted to learn how to box, but never really had the opportunity because there weren't any boxing gyms around. Most of my time was occupied playing competitive soccer 6 days a week until I graduated college. When I moved to SF after college I actually drove by 3rd Street a bunch of times, and was just trying to work up the courage to actually try it out. I tried out another boxing gym too, along with 3rd Street, but definitely felt like 3rd Street was the way to go.”

What's the best part about boxing? Why do you train?

β€œThe best part about boxing is the work out you get from it. It works out your entire body, muscles that you don't really get from normal weight lifting or training. For me particularly as a life-long soccer player, I am weaker in my back and core. I like that you are actually doing something athletic while working out. The hand-eye coordination and focus needed for boxing is mind boggling. This was and still is a huge challenge for me, which makes it even more fun because I have something to work at. It’s funny, I actually feel like boxing put me in better shape to play soccer.”

Any words of advice or encouragement for newbies?

β€œBe patient and consistent. Boxing work outs are super tough, both the physical training and the actual boxing. I know I wasn't able to do everything with proper form at first (probably still can't), and I screwed up most combos (probably still do), but eventually you will start to notice massive improvements in your ability to box, and you will definitely notice your body change for the better.”
